Mareeba Shire is located in the highlands of Tropical North Queensland, Australia and is easily accessible by road, rail and even light plane. The hub for the shire is the township of Mareeba, which is about a one hour drive west from Cairns. From here the shire stretches north towards Cooktown and Cape York, west to the tiny townships of the Gulf Savannah and south to the Atherton Tablelands. The landscape is an ever-changing tapestry of farms and fields, rainforest and grasslands, waterfalls, wetlands and winding rivers, granite gorges and the karsts and limestone caves of Chillagoe.
