Dimbulah developed as an important railway junction following the discovery of minerals in the Hodgkinson Goldfield in 1876. Nearby settlements included Tyrconnell, Kingsborough, Thornborough and Mount Mulligan.
In the early 1900s, a private railway connected Mareeba and Chillagoe, linking the mining fields with the Port of Cairns. A camp formed at Dimbulah around a permanent water source used by the railway.
The name “Dimbulah” is understood to come from a local Aboriginal word meaning “long, permanent waterhole” a fitting name for a town whose development has always been closely connected to water.
